The secret. What is it? What can we do with a secret? And does nature have secrets? Do plants, flowers, and stones contain secrets? If Juliette Treillet questions how to photograph what we cannot see, children look for clues, traces, ghosts of secrets. They pay attention to details, to what is of little interest or that does not catch the eye. Thus, this photographic work encourages them to be curious and patient.
Marks or cracks in the ground, shadows left by what obstructs the light, plays of solids and voids, traces of wear, this is what materializes the life of trees, insects, men, captured in images by the children. In other places, the secret is symbolized by gestures: a finger on the mouth, a mouth to the ear, children gathered together or hidden by a tree.
Additionally, the layout of each of the five posters—one for each class—is a play of textures, shapes, and colors. The yellow of a flower, the blue of the sky, the green of a bush, and the brown of the bark, for example, respond to the human figures and their hand movements. Folded in four, the poster can unfold, little by little, revealing only a few image associations before being revealed in full. This double-sided format also helps maintain the mystery of what is hidden behind it…
It is in the hollows, in the corners, in the folds, that the secrets are hidden.
